Double Basses, 1/16
A double bass should not be chosen solely according to the size designation itself; what matters is the scale length, the height of the ribs, the reach of the left hand and the position adopted while playing. The 3/4 size is commonly used even among adult players, whereas a 4/4 instrument may be unnecessarily large for many players. The musical genre then determines the choice of strings, the type of bridge and the requirements for sound pickup.
Scale length before the number on the label
Two double basses designated as 3/4 instruments do not necessarily have the same scale length. When trying out an instrument, adjust the endpin and check the first position without having to twist your wrist. A 1/2-size model may be suitable for a child or a person of smaller stature, but the decision should be based on the player's actual reach and the teacher's guidance.
Bow and pizzicato players look for a different response
A classical player considers the response of the string under the bow and comfort when playing in higher positions. A jazz double bassist may prefer easier pizzicato playing and a different string action. Choose a German or French double bass bow according to the particular technique that you are learning.
Acoustic body or an electric alternative
An acoustic double bass provides natural volume, but it takes up a great deal of space and reacts sensitively to climatic conditions. An electric double bass is easier to transport and amplify, but its supports must reproduce the stable position provided by the instrument's body. It is not automatically suitable for use in an acoustic orchestra.
Transport is part of the selection process
Measure the doors, the car and the available storage space. A soft case protects the instrument's surface, but it does not protect the instrument against a hard impact. A wheel or carrying straps will make moving the instrument easier, but they must not transfer pressure to the bridge.
Measure the scale length and try out the first position; only after that should you compare the sound, the strings and the available transport options.
