Ocarinas

The ocarina is a vessel flute: sound is produced in an enclosed cavity and you change the pitch by covering the holes. Models differ in tuning, range, number of chambers, material and fingering orientation. As a beginner, you will benefit from a single-chamber ocarina with a clear fingering chart; multiple chambers extend the range but add new fingerings.

Transverse, pendant and multi-chamber

You hold a transverse ocarina in both hands like a compact flute, and it often offers a wider basic range. Pendant models are small but use a different hole layout. Double- and triple-chamber instruments switch between chambers and require precise breath control during the transition.

Choose the tuning according to ensemble playing

The indicated key and register determine which instruments you can easily play with. For solo playing, a comfortable range is more important, while in an ensemble the ocarina must match the key and intonation. A decorative model without specified tuning may not be suitable for precise musical performance.

Ceramic, plastic or wood

Ceramic may have a stable surface, but it will break if dropped. Plastic is light and suitable for travel or for you as a younger player. Wood reacts to moisture and requires careful maintenance. For other traditional tone colours, explore ethnic whistles, while effect whistles are intended more for short sound signals.

Choose the tuning and fingering according to the music you want to play, then consider the durability of the material and the range of the chambers.
