Moondrop CHU III Black — A Budget IEM with HiFi-Grade Tuning

The Moondrop CHU III Black in-ear monitor brings third-generation refinements to Moondrop's popular CHU series, pairing a 10mm high-performance dynamic driver with an aluminum-magnesium alloy composite diaphragm. Tuned to the PopAvg-DF (JM-1) target derived from HRTF measurements, this model aims to deliver a balanced, natural presentation at an entry-level price. The CHU III is the right choice for listeners stepping into the audiophile world who want a measured, scientifically tuned sound without committing to a flagship budget.

What Sets the CHU III Apart

Inside the bean-shaped zinc alloy shell sits a custom 10mm driver driven by an N52 neodymium magnetic circuit producing over 1.5T of magnetic flux, paired with an ultra-lightweight CCAW voice coil for fast transients. A precision brass CNC-machined acoustic nozzle controls treble standing waves and reduces volume errors in the acoustic structure. The aluminum-magnesium alloy dome composite diaphragm is vanishingly thin yet highly rigid, granting near-instantaneous response to micro-details across the frequency band.

Technical Parameters

Designed for easy driving from phones, portable DAC/AMPs, and dedicated digital audio players, the CHU III keeps impedance low and sensitivity high so it scales gracefully with source quality.

• Driver: 10mm high-performance dynamic driver with Al-Mg alloy composite diaphragm
• Frequency Response: 20 Hz – 20 kHz effective range (IEC60318-4, -3 dB), extending to 12 Hz – 50 kHz free-field
• Sensitivity: 118 dB/Vrms @ 1 kHz — pairs comfortably with low-power sources
• Impedance: 16 Ω ±15% @ 1 kHz for easy, source-friendly driving
• Detachable cable design — 1.2 m 0.78mm 2-pin with 3.5mm single-ended stereo plug, swappable for aftermarket upgrades or Bluetooth ear-hooks

Who Should Pick the CHU III

The Moondrop CHU III Black is the right choice for first-time IEM buyers, students, and casual listeners who want a measured, HRTF-based tuning in a compact metal shell. Gamers will appreciate the clear separation of dialogue and mid-range cues in story-driven titles, while commuters benefit from the lightweight zinc alloy cavity that stays comfortable over multi-hour sessions. Audiophiles on a tight budget can use the detachable 0.78mm 2-pin cable to roll in aftermarket upgrades or Bluetooth ear-hooks, extending the IEM's lifespan well beyond its entry-level price point.
